Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Have you ever looked at the birds that live outside near your home?  Do you always have the same birds or are some birds there for a few months and then not there any more?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • The reason that sometimes birds are only outside of your home for a few months is because many birds migrate.  Raise your hand if you know what migration is.  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Migration is when animals move from one place to another place.  Why do you think some animals move instead of staying in one place?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • There are a few different reasons that animals move.  One of the reasons is so that they can find food.
  • In some places, it can get very cold and snowy in the winter.  This means that animals cannot get to the grass to eat it and there are no leaves or fruit on trees or bushes.
  • In other places, it can get very hot and dry in the summer.  This makes it very hard for animals to find food to eat.
  • Another reason that animals migrate or move is to have babies.  Animals like to go to places where it is safe and comfortable for their babies.
  • In the United States, butterflies, birds, whales and elk are some of the animals that migrate.
  • Today, you are going to be listening to a book called Boundless Sky.
  • This book is about the journey of one bird during its migration.
  • After we listen to the book, I am going to give you a worksheet that has questions about Boundless Sky.
  • After you have finished doing the worksheet, we will talk about your answers.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share.)
