  • What are some animals that migrate?  (Allow the students to answer.)

  • There are many different animals that migrate.  Many different types of birds and butterflies migrate.
  • Other animals that migrate are whales, elk and antelope.
  • Do you remember why animals migrate?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Animals migrate to find food.  Some animals live in places where there is only food that is easy to find for part of the year.  When it gets very cold and snowy or very hot and dry and there is no food, then the animals need to move.  The animals then migrate or move back when the weather improves and they can find food again.
  • Animals also migrate when they are going to have babies.  Animals like to have babies in places that are safe and comfortable.  That means that if they live someplace where it is very cold or very hot during part of the year, that is not a good place to have a baby.  The animals will move to someplace that is more comfortable or safe for a baby.  Once the baby gets bigger and stronger, the animals migrate or move back to where they started.
  • There are many different types of birds that migrate.  Some birds, like the arctic tern, migrate thousands of miles from the north pole to the south pole.  Hummingbirds and monarch butterflies migrate from Canada to Mexico, which is hundreds of miles.
  • You are going to be reading about bird migration.  Then, you will be answering questions.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share)
