Lesson Plan: Life Cycle (Math - Grade K)

life cycle lesson

Subject:  Math

Grade: K

Lesson Objective: To count to answer the question ‘how many?’

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5- Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Why do you think we should know how to count?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • We should know how to count so that we can figure out how many of something there is.  For example, if your mom gives you a plate of cookies, you might count them to see how many you were given.
  • What number do we start with when we count?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • We start with the number one and usually count up by ones.  We say, one, two, three, four, five and then keep going.
  • When you are counting a group of objects, point to each object as you count them is a really good idea to help you keep track of your counting.
  • Let’s try it.  Draw 9 circles on the board in a line.  Then, have the students count with you as you point and count each of the nine circles.
  • Today, you are going to be figuring out how many animals there are.
  • I am going to give you a worksheet that has groups of different animals.  You are going to point and count each group.
  • After you count, you will write down on the line how many animals there are in each group.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share.)
