  • A caterpillar changes in to a butterfly.  Raise your hand if you have seen a butterfly.
  • Caterpillars and butterflies are very different.  Do you know how a caterpillar changes in to a butterfly?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • A caterpillar goes through metamorphosis, which is when its body changes.  Caterpillars form a chrysalis and while they are inside it, their bodies change to become a butterfly.
  • All living things go through changes as they grow.  This is called a life cycle.  What kind of changes did you go through as you were growing?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • People get bigger as they grow.  Some babies are born without hair or loose their hair.  One of the changes is that people grow hair.
  • Babies cannot sit up, walk or talk when they are born.  Those are all things that people learn to do as they grow.
  • Today, we are going to read the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  Raise your hand if you have read this book before.
  • Many of you have read it, so you already know the story.  While you are listening to it, I want you to be thinking about the changes that the caterpillar in the story goes through.
  • Pay attention to what the caterpillar does to get ready to change.
  • After you listen to the story, we are going to do a worksheet together.
