butterfly life cycle

Subject:  Science

Grade: K

Lesson Objective: To learn about the life cycle of a butterfly

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.K.1- With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

  • What is special about a butterfly?  (Allow the students to answer.)

  • Butterflies are special because they look completely different as adults than they do when they are babies.
  • When people are adults, they are bigger than they were when they were babies, but what their body has is the same.  If you are born with two arms and two legs, then that is how many arms and legs you have as an adult.
  • A butterfly goes through so many changes from when they are a baby to when they are an adult.  This is called a life cycle.
  • A life cycle shows the changes that happen to a living thing as it moves through its life.
  • Raise your hand if you think you know the life cycle of a butterfly.
  • We are going to be looking at a worksheet that shows the life cycle of a butterfly.  (Hand out the worksheet and have the students look at the picture of the life cycle)
  • What do you notice about the life cycle of the butterfly?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • You noticed a lot!  I am going to read to you about the life cycle of the butterfly.  I would like you to point to each part of the life cycle while I read about it.  (Read the information written on the worksheet under the life cycle picture.)
  • We are now going to answer questions about the life cycle of the butterfly.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share)
