Lesson Objective: To write an opinion piece about football

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.1- Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.




  • Do you like to give your opinion or talk about what you like or want to do and why?  (Allow the students to answer.)



  • Giving an opinion is something that people do all of the time.  People give their opinion about what food they want to eat, what they want to do, who they want to see, what they want to read and so many other things! 
  • Can you think of something that you gave your opinion about today?  Raise your hand if you can think of one thing.  (Allow the students to answer)
  • When you give your opinion, you are telling people have you feel about something.  It is important to be able to give opinions.
  • Today, you are going to be writing an opinion.  When you write about your opinion, you are going to say how you feel or what you think about that thing. 
  • After you give your opinion, you need to give a reason for having that opinion.  If you do not give a reason, the reader will not know why you feel the way that you do. 
  • The last thing you do is write an ending.
  • For example, “I like to wear my coat outside.  It keeps me warm.  If I did not have my coat, I would be cold.”  (Write this on the board for the students to see)
  • You are now going to be giving your opinion about whether or not you would like to play football.  Raise your hand if you know your opinion.  Can you think of a reason that you would want to play football or not play football?  Great!  You will now start writing. 
  • Does anyone have any questions?



  • Who would like to share what you wrote?  (Allow the students to share.)
