 # Lesson Plan: Football (Math - GR 1) Subject:  Math

Lesson Objective: To use add and subtract within 10

Common Core StandardCCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6- Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

• What is the difference between adding and subtracting?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

• When you add numbers, you are putting them together.  For example, if you are adding 1 + 2, you are putting one of something and two of something together.  What answer would you get?  (Allow the students to answer.  You can use your fingers to show them adding.)
• When you are subtracting numbers, you are taking some away.  For example, if you are subtracting 2 – 1, you are taking one away from two.  What answer would you get?  (Allow the students to answer.  You can use your fingers to show them subtracting.)
• You have been drawing pictures and using number lines to help you figure out addition and subtraction problems.  These are two really good strategies to use!
• The more you use addition and subtraction, the easier it will be.
• What also helps to make addition and subtraction easier is learning facts.  This means that you learn the answers to addition and subtraction problems so that you do not need to figure them out every time.
• There are many different addition facts that add up to 10.  (Write these on the board- 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5)  All of these facts equal 10.
• You can also take any of these facts and turn it into a subtraction problem.  For example, 10-6=4.  You just look at the addition problem and read it backwards.
• You are going to be completing some addition and subtraction problems just like the ones we talked about.
