Lesson Plan: Football (Reading - GR 1)

Lesson Objective: To listen to "Miss Nelson Has a Field Day" and then answer questions about the book

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • What do you know about football?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Football is a sport that is played by people on two teams.  Both teams are trying to score points by getting the football into the endzone, which is a space at the end of the football field.  Each team wears helmets and pads on their shoulders. 
  • One player, called the quarterback, throws the ball.  The other players try to catch it and run down the field to score or they try to stop the other team.  The players stop the other team by trying to knock them down or out of the way.  This is called tackling.
  • Raise your hand if you have watched or played football.  What is your favorite thing about football? (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Football players are very strong and have to practice a lot.  They run, lift weights and make healthy choices.
  • One of the people who helps the football players to get better and play well together is called the coach.  The coach is the person who is in charge of the team.
  • Today, you are going to be listening to a book called Miss Nelson Has a Field Day. 
  • Some of you may know the book, Miss Nelson is Missing.  This is another book about her.  Miss Nelson is a teacher.
  • After we listen to the book, I am going to give you a worksheet that has questions about Miss Nelson Has a Field Day. 
  • After you have finished doing the worksheet, we will talk about your answers.
