Subject:  Math

Grade: 1

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.1- Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.

Materials:

    Starter:

    Say:

    • What is length?  (Allow the students to answer.)

    Main:

    Say:

    • Length is how long something is.  There are many reasons that it is helpful to know the length of an object.  Can you think of a reason?  (Allow the students to answer.)
    • It is helpful to know the length of something when you are buying furniture to make sure that it will fit in a room.  It is helpful to know the length of pants that you are buying to make sure that they will fit you.  And it is helpful to know the length of a garden to make sure you have space for all of the vegetables that you want to plant.
    • You can measure objects using a ruler or a tape measure.
    • You can also figure out the length of something by using another object to compare it.  Sometimes just knowing if something is longer or shorter is very helpful.
    • If you have another object that you can compare to, you will know if it is longer or shorter than that object.
    • For example, if you want to use the longest pencil that you have, you can compare it to other pencils.  When you line the pencils up, you will be able to see which pencil is the longest.
    • You could do the same thing if you were looking for the shortest of something.
    • You are now going to look at pictures of different vegetables.  You are going to compare the length of the vegetables and figure out which one is either the longest or the shortest.  When you are done, we will go over all of the answers.
    • Does anyone have any questions?
