Lesson Plan: Harvest (Writing - Grade 1)

Lesson Objective: To write an opinion piece about which vegetable the student would most like to grow and why

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.1- Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.




  • Do you have a favorite vegetable?  (Allow the students to answer.)



  • Everyone has different vegetables that they like.  There are many different reasons that someone might like a vegetable.  Can you think of some reasons that you like your favorite vegetable?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Those are really good reasons!  It is really fun to hear about all of the different vegetables that you like and the reasons that you like them.
  • We know that farmers grow a lot of different vegetables, but some people have gardens at their home and grow only a few vegetables.
  • You all have a favorite vegetable.  Wouldn’t it be fun to grow that vegetable, pick it fresh and then eat it?
  • Today, you are going to be writing about which vegetable you would grow in a garden.
  • When you write, you will explain that you are writing about a vegetable that you would choose to grow.  You should include reasons that you would choose to grow that vegetable.
  • For example, “I would grow broccoli in my garden.  I like broccoli because it is delicious.  I also like the way that it looks.  I think eating fresh broccoli would be fun.”  (Write this on the board for the students to see)
  • I would like you to think about what vegetable you would choose and why.  Raise your hand if you know.  Great!  You will now start writing. 
  • Does anyone have any questions?



  • Who would like to share what you wrote?  (Allow the students to share.)
