A Taste of Asia: Banana Pancakes and Other Recipes

Brief Description

Students follow recipes to prepare banana pancakes and other foods that are common in some Asian American cultures.

Objectives

Students follow recipe directions to prepare some typical Asian American foods.

Materials Needed

 

  • a world map, a globe, or the site noted in the lesson
  • computers with Internet access (optional)
  • for banana pancakes: flour, baking powder, eggs, milk, ripe bananas, castor sugar or superfine sugar, granulated sugar, salt, oil

Lesson Plan

 

  • Ask students to name different ways they eat bananas. Ask students whether they have had bananas in pancakes. Explain that they will prepare banana pancakes, a popular recipe from Malaysia.
  • Show students Malaysia on a world map, globe, or at the CIA World Factbook 2000 -- Malaysia Web page.
  • Link to Banana Pancakes for the recipe.

Assessment

Evaluate students' abilities to follow recipe directions and work together in a group.
