Brief Description
Students learn the letter names for the treble clef (G clef) and create words using the letters that represent the lines and spaces on the staff.
Objectives
Students
- define the terms staff (as used in music) and treble clef,
- learn the letter names for the lines and spaces on the treble clef,
- learn how to read a treble clef,
- make words using the letters and notes on the staff.
Keywords
music, treble clef, staff, lines, spaces, messages
Materials Needed
- music paper with staff lines, or printouts from Treble Clef Sheet Music (this PDF document might take a minute to load)
- pens or pencils
Lesson Plan
- Discuss the meaning of the terms staff and treble clef. Draw a staff on the board with the treble clef sign. Draw the notes on the lines and spaces, and label each one. See Treble Clef Names for reference.
- Explain that the letters on the lines and spaces can be combined to spell words. For example, the letters F A C E on the spaces spell the word face. Draw the example on the board. Write the correct letter under each note.
- Distribute the music work sheet. Tell students to write the correct letter under each note to spell out words. Here are some words to start your list:
egg
bed
fad
gab
cab
dab
dad
bad
feed
fed
cafe
fade
cabbage
baggage
Extension: Help students create sentences that include the words on the music work sheet. Write the sentences on the board or on another piece of paper, but omit the words on the music work sheet. Have students use those words to complete sentences.
Assessment
Evaluate students' answers.
