Grade:6-8, 9-12

Brief Description

Students work in teams to complete a WebQuest in which they create multimedia presentations and persuasive editorials on the political and economic implications of immigration.

Objectives

Students explore the political and economic implications of immigration, form opinions based on their research, and try to convince others that their opinions are correct.

Keywords

immigration, debate, WebQuest, demographics, economics, multicultural

Materials Needed

Online or print resources and photographs related to immigration; the online version of The Immigration Today WebQuest or printouts of the WebQuest directions and resources. Note: Many of the resource links on this WebQuest might have expired, but the activity itself is too good not to share; replacement links can be easily found, or students can track down their own resources.

Lesson Plan

Explain to students that they will assume a variety of roles as employees of a local newspaper as they complete The Immigration Today WebQuest. Then organize students into groups of five, and assign each student a role: news editor, features editor, statistician, political correspondent, or photojournalist. Have students examine the various aspects of immigration from their assigned perspective, compile their findings in multimedia presentations, and collaborate to write opinion pieces for the editorial page of the newspaper.

Assessment

Evaluate groups of students on their multimedia presentations and editorials.
