Students complete an online scavenger hunt about tenement life around the turn of the century.

Lesson Plan

Invite students to explore the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and A Tenement Story to examine the artifacts found during the restoration of 97 Orchard Street and to learn about tenement life. Then provide students with the Tenement Tour work sheet and ask them to complete the scavenger hunt.

Assessment

Evaluate students on their answers to the questions in the scavenger hunt. Tenement Tour work sheet answers: 1. 1864; 2. 20; 3. 20; 4. more than 2,000; 5. Russia; 6. Jewish; 7. $8,000; 8. 1935; 9. $7.50 a week; 10. 150,000.
