All things considered, how do you feel about your paycheck?
I think I am paid fairly.
I think my salary is in the ballpark, but a small increase would be nice.
I am way underpaid for the work I do and what is expected of me.

IN THE NEWS

Did you catch the latest teacher salary survey when it was released last month? According to the NEA's annual survey, the national average public school teacher makes $49,026. Increases doled in the year of the survey did not keep pace with inflation. As a matter of fact, according to the NEA, over the past decade teacher salaries have increased just 1.3 percent after adjusting for inflation. Where does your state stand when it comes to teacher pay? (See the survey)

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Have you seen this Web site? Your students (and you) might get hooked on FreeRice.com. It's a vocabulary game with a twist. Each time you get a correct answer, a grain of rice is added to your bowl. The twist is that each time you play the game a grain of rice is actually donated to help feed hungry people around the world. So go enrich your vocabulary and help feed the hungry at FreeRice.com.

CAUGHT ON THE NET

All kids love Mad Libs. These fill-in-the-blank activities are also a fun way to reinforce parts of speech with students in grades 3 and up. They're always good for a laugh on a Friday afternoon, or anytime. And they make a great end-of-day or end-of-week reward too. The EduPlace Web site (part of Houghton Mifflin) offers their own version of this popular activity: they call them Wacky Web Tales. Each month they post a new batch of timely tales. Look now and you're sure see some on themes related to Presidents Day and Valentine's Day.

EducationWorld has reviewed thousands of sites of interest to educators. Be sure to visit our Site Review Archive. You might also visit our Site to See themed listings.

FROM THE LIBRARY SHELF

There are two sides to every story. Rosalyn Schanzer's engaging and wonderfully illustrated book brings to life both sides of the American Revolution. The narrative introduces anew the two enemies, both named George: George Washington, the man who freed the American colonies from the British, and George III, the British king who lost them. Two leaders on different sides of the Atlantic, yet with more in common than we sometimes acknowledge. Rosalyn Schanzer's book is an accessible account of one the most vital periods in American history. It is also a timeless lesson in seeing history from different points of view. The author uses art, text, and first-hand accounts to illustrate how history should never be reduced to simplistic conflicts between the "good guys" and the "bad guys." Her illustrations, and her engaging quote bubbles, bring the Revolution to life again, and allow the characters of the period to speak for themselves. Read more about the book on author Elizabeth Rusch's Web site. Buy the book.

UPCOMING CONFERENCES

Maybe Monday will be a good day to approach your school or district leaders about attending one of these upcoming conferences put on by well-known national associations.

Fresh. Focus. Strategies. Perspectives.
The annual conference of the National School Boards Association (NSBA) will be in Orlando from March 29 - April 1, 2008.

Transforming School Communities: Voices for Student Health
The annual conference of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) will be in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from June 28 - July 1, 2008.

If your national non-profit organizations conference should be listed here, send an email to [email protected]. We will be happy to include it in our rotation so long as it is open to all educators and/or administrators (not only members).

LEAVE 'EM LAUGHING

How's this one for a backward compliment?

As a traffic safety consultant, Paul often spoke to PTOs and church organizations on the topic of accident prevention. One night, after speaking to a school group, the PTO president profusely thanked Paul and handed him a check for $50.

"Giving these presentations is part of my job," Paul said. "Do you think I could donate the money to one of your school funds?"

"That'd be wonderful," the president beamed. "We have just the program: we're trying to raise money so we can afford better speakers."

Now go and enjoy your weekend!
