Fresh Ideas for Landing a Summer Job

What makes a good summer job for teachers? The topic is much-debated online. To cut through the clutter, Education World surfed the Web to find options that actually make sense for educators.

The job Web site Snagajob.com covered three obvious scenarios, along with one that might work for teachers seeking a change of pace. In Best Summer Jobs for Teachers, the site suggests tutoring, working at a camp, and going into child care. Those are likely ideas that teachers have already considered.

Where the site gets interesting is its fourth suggestion—that teachers consider a summer job in the restaurant industry. “Not only are restaurants looking to hire more staff for the summer, you could really make a lot of money in tips,” wrote Kim Costa for Snagajob. “Restaurants will give you the ability to have a flexible schedule and could become a reliable source of income during other school breaks.”

Careelism.com mirrors some of Snagajob’s suggestions in 7 Sweet Summer Jobs for Teachers, but also suggests teaching abroad as an option. The article also details the qualifications needed to land a job in another country.

“Qualifications include experience working with teenagers, experience of work, study or travel in your destination country, fluency in the local language, passion and professionalism, and a college degree,” according to the article.

For the less adventurous, Careelism also suggests that teachers look into the possibility of doing freelance work. “English teachers have more than adequate writing abilities for many freelance jobs, and many STEM teachers will have the necessary skills for work in Web design, computer science or online education fields,” the site explained.

About.com takes a different approach entirely in its How to Get a Summer Job for Teachers. While the site does list ideas including many of the ones featured in the aforementioned articles, it focuses more on landing the job. The About story is fairly comprehensive and offers a lot of links that delve further into the topic.

Of course, here at Education World we have also examined how to get a summer job from a number of angles. Check out these stories for more on the topic:
