Lesson Plan: Baseball (Writing - Grade 1)

Lesson Objective: To write an opinion piece about baseball

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.1- Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.

Materials:

  • What types of sports do you like to play?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • There are many different sports that you could play and they all have different things that make them a lot of fun. 
  • Did you know that you just gave your opinion?  What is giving an opinion?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Giving an opinion means telling someone what you think or how you feel about something.  Do you think you ever give your opinion?
  • You give your opinion all of the time.  When someone asks you what you would like to eat, what you would like to do, what show you would like to watch, what you would like to read or where you would like to go, you are giving your opinion when you answer.
  • You often give your opinion when speaking to someone, but it is also important to be able to give opinions when writing.
  • When writing you opinion, you first need to say what your opinion is.  You should then give some reasons for having that opinion.  Adding reasons to your writing makes it more interesting.
  • For example, my opinion might be that dogs are the best pets to have because they are really excited to see you when you get home, you can play fetch with them and take them for walks.
  • When writing my opinion I might write, “I think that dogs are the best pets because they are always happy to see you when you get home.  I like that you can play with them and take them for walks.”
  • Today, you are going to be writing an opinion about whether or not you would like to play baseball.  After you give your opinion, you need to give a reason for having that opinion.   The last thing you do is write an ending.  Can you think of a reason that you would want to or not want to play baseball?  Great!  You will now start writing.
