Lesson Plan: Baseball (Social Studies - Grade 1)

Lesson Objective: To learn about baseball and answer questions

Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.1- Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Materials:

  • What do you know about baseball?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Baseball is a sport that is called America’s pastime.  This is because baseball has been played in America for hundreds of years.
  • Baseball is a sport that you play using a bat, a baseball and a glove to catch the ball in.  Baseball is played by two teams.
  • Each team tries to score runs when it is their turn to bat.  The other team tries to catch the ball and get them out. 
  • Raise your hand if you have ever watched a baseball game.
  • Baseball games can be really long.  This is because they are nine innings long and during each inning, each team has to get three outs.  Baseball games can be hours long.
  • Many people enjoy watching baseball and many people enjoy playing baseball.
  • There are people who play baseball as their job, there are people who play baseball in high school and college and there are people who play baseball just for fun.
  • Many children start playing baseball in Little League.  There are grown-ups who play baseball on teams just to have fun with their friends.
  • We are going to read about baseball.  I am going to give you a worksheet.  I will read about baseball and you should follow along.  Then, you are then going to answer questions about what you have read.  (Read the paragraphs about baseball to the students.  Read the questions to them as well.)
