Say:

  • Have you ever written a word problem?  What was it like?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • When you are writing a word problem, you can be very creative.
  • Today you are going to be solving and writing word problems using multiplication and division.
  • Writing a word problem can be fun!  It is important to think about the situation that you are going to use in the word problem.  Today, you will be using migration.
  • Next you need to remember some of the key words that will help the person doing your problem know whether to use multiplication or division.
  • Some of the key words that might be used in words problems that use multiplication are by, double, every, product and times.
  • Some of the key words that might be used in word problems that use division are as much as, how many in each, quotient and share something equally.
  • Now, you are going to be doing some word problems.  You will solve the first word problem using either multiplication or division.  Then, you will write your own word problems that use multiplication or division and are about migration.  When you are done, we will go over all of the answers and you can share your word problems.
  • You will then trade with a partner and solve each other’s word problems
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:
