Lesson Plan: Migration (Writing - Grade 3)

Subject:  Writing

Grade: 3

Lesson Objective: To write an opinion indicating whether it is better for animals that migrate to live in groups or not

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.1- Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Why do you think that some animals live in a group?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • There are many different reasons that animals live in a group.  You learned some of those when we talked about migration.
  • Today, you are going to be writing your opinion about whether it is better for animals that migrate to live in groups or not.
  • Sharing your opinion about different topics is something that we all do.  It is important to learn the best way to share an opinion.
  • It is important to give reasons for why you think or believe the way you do.  If you do not give reasons, no one will understand why you feel the way that you do.
  • For example, if you would like to have pizza for dinner instead of chicken nuggets, it is important to be able to explain why you want pizza.  One of the reasons that you give could be that you had chicken last night for dinner.  Another could be that you are allowed to have pizza once a week and you haven’t had pizza yet that week.
  • When you give reasons and details that support your opinion, it makes it easier for other people to understand why you feel the way that you do.
  • Now, you are going to be writing your opinion.  Remember to include as many reasons or details as you can.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share what your opinion is?  (Allow the students to share.)
