# Lesson Plan: Migration (Math - Grade 2)

Subject:  Math

Lesson Objective: To determine if a group of objects has an odd or even number

Common Core StandardCCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.C.3- Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

• What are some odd numbers?  What are some even numbers?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

• Today you are going to be figuring out if groups of objects have an odd number or an even number.
• An odd number is a number that cannot be evenly counted by 2’s.  For example, if you had five cookies, you could count 2 and then 4, but then you would have one left over.  That makes the number 5 odd.
• An even number is a number that can be evenly counted by 2’s.  For example, if you had six cookies, you could count 2, 4 and then 6.  There are no cookies left over, so that makes the number even.
• The easiest way to figure out if a group of objects is odd or even is to circle them in pairs.  If there are no objects left over, the number is even.  If there is one object left over, the number is odd.
• Now, you are going to be doing figuring out if the groups of objects are odd or even.  You will also be writing the number of objects down.  When you are done, we will go over all of the answers.
