Subject:  Social Studies

Grade: 1

Lesson Objective: To learn about hockey and answer questions

Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.1- Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

  • What do you know about ice hockey?  (Allow the students to answer.)

  • Ice hockey is a game played on ice.  Two teams play against each other and try to score goals.
  • There are six hockey players on each team on the ice at a time.  There are really about 20 players on each team, but only 6 can play at a time.
  • The players take turns resting on the bench and then playing in the game.
  • We have talked about how hockey players use a stick to move the puck on the ice.
  • The puck is an object in shape of a thick disk.  It almost looks like a can of tuna fish.  It is made of black rubber.
  • It can go faster than 100 miles an hour when it is hit on the ice.  That is much faster than cars drive on a highway!
  • The sticks that the players use are made from wood.  They are pretty long.  The stick that the goalie uses is also made from wood.  It is shorter and has a bigger blade.  This is to help the goalie stop the puck from going in to the net.
  • We are going to read about ice hockey.  I am going to give you a worksheet.  I will read about ice hockey and you should follow along.  Then, you are then going to answer questions about what you have read.  (Read the paragraphs about ice hockey to the students.  Read the questions to them as well.)
  • Does anyone have any questions?

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share)
