Lesson Plan: Harvest (Science - Grade K)

Lesson Objective: To learn about different locations to grow vegetables

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.K.1- With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Have you ever planted anything?  Tell me about it.  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Planting plants can be a lot of fun. We know that farmers plant vegetables and fruits and then harvest them in autumn. 
  • Many families plant gardens.  Raise your hand if you have a vegetable garden or have planted some vegetable plants.
  • Some of the types of vegetables that many people like to grow in their gardens are tomatoes, beans and squash such as zucchini.
  • There are many different types of gardens.  Some gardens are very large and have a fence around them and some gardens are very small and are all in one pot.
  • What do you think vegetable plants need to grow?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Vegetables, just like all other plants, need soil, water and sun.  Vegetables should be planted in a place that allows them to easily be watered and get sun. 
  • Growing vegetables can be really exciting because you get to watch a small plant get bigger and then grow something that you can pick and eat.
  • Today, we are going to be reading about different types of vegetable gardens.  We will then answer some questions about what we have read.
