Lesson Plan: Football

Subject:  Social Studies

Grade: 2

Lesson Objective: To learn about the game of football including the rules and scoring

Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1- Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

  • Do you think it is important to have rules in a game?  Why or why not?  (Allow the students to answer.)

  • When people get together to play games, it is important that there are rules.  When there are rules, all of the players know what they can and cannot do.

  • Players know how to score points and how they are able to stop the other team from scoring points.

  • Rules help players know where they can be in a playing area, how to behave around other players and what equipment they can use in the game.

  • Rules help to keep the people playing the games safe.  If there were no rules, people would be able to do whatever they wanted and players could get hurt.

  • Have you ever played a game without rules?  What was it like?  (Allow the students to answer.)

  • Playing a game without rules can be very frustrating.  You do not know what you are allowed to do, how to score points or what you are supposed to be doing.

  • Playing a game like soccer, basketball or football that has rules is much more enjoyable because you know what you are supposed to be doing, you know what you are allowed to do and you know how to score.

  • You are going to read about the rules of football.  You are then going to answer questions about what you have read.

  • Does anyone have any questions?

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share)
