Lesson Plan: Football

Subject:  Writing

Grade: 2

Lesson Objective: To write a story about what it would be like to be the football in a game

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.3- Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

  • Have you ever imagined what it would be like to be an object?  (Allow the students to answer.)

  • Imagining that you are an object is kind of a funny thing to think about.  You could imagine that you are a table.  What types of stories would a table tell about all of the things that have happened at it?

  • A table might tell a story about how a family ate all of their meals on it.  It might tell a story about how homework was done on it every day after school.  It might tell a story about how it was used for crafts and playdoh.  There are many stories a table could tell.

  • What is another object that you think it would be fun to imagine being?  (Allow the students to answer.)

  • When imagining being an object it is important to think about all of the different things that could happen to you.  Most objects can be used in more than one way and so remembering to include all of the different ways makes it more interesting.

  • You are now going to be writing a story about what it would be like to be the football in a football game.  When you are writing your story, think about what you would see, hear and touch, what you would be thinking and feeling.  Write as many details as you can.  Then, you will be sharing what you wrote.

  • Does anyone have any questions?

  • Who would like to share the story that you wrote?  (Allow the students to share.)
