# Lesson Plan: Football (Math, Grade K)

Subject:  Math

Lesson Objective: To compare the length of two objects

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.A.2- Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference.

Materials:

• Have you ever compared the length of two objects?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

• Comparing the length of objects is something that people do for many different reasons.  You might need to find the longest baseball bat to use, the shortest foot or the longest piece of ribbon.
• When you compare two objects you need to line them up so that they are next to each other and one end is even.
• Then, you can look to see which object is longer and which object is shorter.
• When two objects are laying down, you usually use the words longer and shorter to compare them.
• When two objects are standing up, you usually use the words taller and shorter to compare them.
• When comparing the length of objects, you do not need to know exactly how long the objects are, so you do not need to measure them.
• Let’s compare two objects together.  I have a paper clip and a pencil (hold the objects up so the students can see.)  I am going to line them up so that the end of the paperclip and the end of the pencil are even.  (Demonstrate this).  I can now look to see which object is longer.  Which is longer?  (Allow the students to answer.)
• Today, you are going to be comparing the length of two objects.  You will look at the pictures of the objects and then figure out which one is longer or shorter.  You will circle the object that you think answers the questions, “which is longer” or “which is shorter.”
