Lesson Plan: Football - Math

Subject:  Math

Grade: 3

Lesson Objective: To use multiplication and division to solve equations

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.4: Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 × ? = 48, 5 = _ ÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ?

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Why do you think that it is important to know multiplication and division? (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Multiplication and division are faster and easier to do than addition and subtraction when using big numbers.
  • If you had to add the number 8 six different times, it would take much longer than just knowing that 8 times 6 is 48.
  • Just like multiplication is faster than addition, division is faster than subtraction.
  • Learning multiplication and division can take time, but once you know the fact families, it is easy!
  • Remember, a number or fact family is a group of equations that are made using the same set of numbers.  A number or fact family shows the relationships between the three numbers used.
  • When learning math facts, it is important to understand how numbers work together in an equation.  A number or fact family helps you understand.
  • If you look at an equation and notice that a number is missing, you should think about fact families and that will help you to figure out the missing number.
  • Now, you are going to do a worksheet with multiplication and division problems.  Remember to think about fact families when doing them.  When you are done, we will go over all of the answers.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share.)
