Jackie Robinson Social Studies Lesson Plan

Subject:  Social Studies

Grade: 2

Lesson Objective: To learn about Jackie Robinson.  Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1- Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • What do you think it would be like to be the first person to do something special?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • There are many things that we do every day that people have done before us.  We ride in a car or on a bus, we go to school, we use computers or iPads and we watch TV.  We don’t even think about these things when we do them.
  • Did you know that there was someone who was the first person to do all of those things?  Do you like being the first person to try something or do you like to wait and watch to see what happens?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Today we are talking about Jackie Robinson.  He was the first African-American to play baseball in major leagues. 
  • Before Jackie Robinson started playing baseball with white people, there were segregated leagues.  This means that black people and white people were not allowed to play baseball together.
  • What do you think it was like for Jackie Robinson to be the first black person to play baseball on a team of all white people?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • It takes a really special, brave, confident person to be the first to do something.  Jackie Robinson was very special.
  • You are going to read about Jackie Robinson.  You are then going to answer questions about what you have read.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
