Lesson Plan: Baseball (Reading - Grade 2)

Lesson Objective: To read a poem about Jackie Robinson and then answer questions about it

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1- Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • What do you know about baseball?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Today we are going to be talking about baseball. 
  • Most people have watched or played baseball.  Baseball is a sport that is called America’s pastime.  Baseball is a game that most people can play or enjoy watching. 
  • Raise your hand if you have watched or played baseball.  What do you like most about baseball?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • There are many players who are well known because they were great players or because they did something no one else had done.  One of those players was Jackie Robinson. 
  • Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play Major League Baseball.  Before 1947 when he started playing, no other black people had ever played Major League Baseball. 
  • He did not have an easy time because many people did not want him playing, but he never gave up.
  • I am going to read a poem called, “Jackie Changes the Game.”
  • While I read the poem to you, I would like you to be thinking about how what the poem is talking about and what it means.  (Read the poem)
  • Now that I have read the poem, raise your hand if you think you know what it was about.  (Allow the students to answer). 
  • I am going to give you a worksheet that has questions about the poem that I read to you.  It also has a copy of the poem so that you can read it to yourself.
  • After you have finished reading the poem again and doing the worksheet, we will talk about your answers.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
