Materials:

Essential Question: How do I use correct capitalization within a well written complete sentence?

Activating Strategy: With partner/group students make a list of when you need to capitalize

Teaching Strategy:

  • Give students the capitalization rules handout (if your students keep a writing folder or handbook this would be a great handout to save for future reference)
  • Review the handout with students (their version of the notes are incomplete so they will have to follow along to complete their notes)
  • If you have individual whiteboards have students write their guesses for the blanks based on the given information
  • Pair students up and give the capitalization sheet to work through with their partner
  • Do a mix and freeze for students to share their corrections with other students
  • Mix and Freeze: play music, students meander throughout room, music stops, students match up with classmate to share corrections (encourage debate over answers that don’t match)
  • After a few rounds of Mix and Freeze have students sit and as a whole group review the practice sheet
  • Summarizing Strategy: 3-2-1: On a sticky 3 things that were new about capitalization to the student, 2 things they already knew about capitalization, 1 thing that you will tell someone at home about the lesson

Homework/Extending the lesson: Give students highlighter or colored pen to go though their Getting to Know you paragraph from Lesson #2 and mark places that capitalization needs to be fixed
