Essential Question: How do I compose a well written complete sentence?

Activating Strategy: Question Carousel-Divide the class into 4 different groups (each group should have a different color marker), have one of the following questions written on chart paper spread out through the room, each group has 2 mins at each question to work together to write their answer. (1) What is a sentence? (2) How could this sentence be improved: The dog came inside. (3) What does a good sentence include? (4) Write a boring sentence

Teaching Strategy: When all groups have visited each station post each of the papers at the front of the room to review as a whole group what each individual group came up with for each station.

  • Give each student a copy of the stretch a sentence handout
  • Ask students to look over #1 and #2, ask what they notice about stretching a sentence (asking basic questions; who, what , when, where, how)
  • Complete #1 together
  • Let students complete #2 with a partner
  • Share #2 with whole Group
  • Students complete #3 and #4 with a partner
  • Students work on illustration while waiting for all partners to finish

Summarizing Strategy: Ticket Out the Door: Students answer EQ on a sticky note and post on board or door on the way out
