Brief Description

Students use a map key to estimate the distance from Salt Lake City, Utah, to ten other cities. They use an online distance calculator to learn the actual distances. Then they determine the difference between their estimates and the actual distances. (Older students might estimate distances on a world map.)

Objectives

Students will
  • use a map key to estimate distances between two points on a map,
  • use an online resource to figure the actual distance between two points on a map,
  • figure the difference between their estimates and the actual distance.

Keywords

map, estimate, key, distance, travel, calculate, geography

Materials Needed

  • copies of teacher-created chart (model provided)
  • U.S. or world map with a mileage key
  • computers with Internet access (optional)

Lesson Plan

  • Hand out copies of the teacher-created distance chart, or have students copy the chart from the chalk board.
  • Have students use a U.S. map to estimate the distance between Salt Lake City, Utah, and other cities around the United States. (Have older students use a world map to estimate greater distances.)
  • After students have made their estimates, have them use the online How Far Is It? distance calculator to find the precise distance between the two locations.
  • Ask students to determine how close to the exact distance their estimates were.

Your town or city
Hartford, Conn.
Miami, Fla.
Seattle, Wash.
Cleveland, Ohio
San Diego, Calif.
Honolulu, Hawaii
Birmingham, Ala.
Washington, D.C.
Butte, Mont.

Note: If students do not have access to the online distance calculator, incorporate the actual distance as part of the chart. Those distances, according to the How Far Is It? Web site, are Your town: answers will vary Hartford: 2,027 miles Miami: 2,090 miles Seattle:700 miles Cleveland: 1,571 miles San Diego:620 miles Honolulu: 2,990 miles Birmingham: 1,468 miles Washington, D.C.: 1,849 miles Butte:362 miles

Assessment

Depending on grade level, students will complete the exercise with appropriate accuracy. For example, the distance in the "difference between estimate and actual" column should not exceed 500 miles for a sixth-grade student.
