Bookmark Crafts for the Holidays

Students create bookmarks with a holiday theme.

Objectives

Students demonstrate creative thinking skills in decorating bookmarks.

Materials Needed

  • different colored poster board or tagboard
  • rulers
  • scissors
  • glue or paste
  • markers
  • student-selected art materials
  • different colored felt or pieces of various types of material (optional)

Lesson Plan

 

  • Ask students to define the word bookmark. Discuss how people use bookmarks. Tell students that they are going to make holiday bookmarks.
  • Distribute poster board or tagboard, rulers, scissors. Tell students to cut the board into 8-inch by 2-inch strips. (You might want to cut out the bookmarks for young students.)
  • Let students choose materials to decorate their bookmarks. Encourage creativity!

Variation 1: Have students make the bookmarks from felt or from pieces of various types of material.

Variation 2: Have students make bookmarks related to themes of specific December holidays; for example, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas.

Assessment

Observe students' participation in the activity.
