Brief Description
Students write biographies of important pioneers in the space program.

Objectives

Students increase their knowledge about the history of the space program and practice their writing skills.

Keywords

space, pioneer, biography

Materials Needed

Hear the Space Pioneers, Astronaut Biographies, or other online and print resources about scientists and astronauts involved in the space program.

Lesson Plan

Provide students with a list of such space pioneers as Robert Goddard, Kanstantin Tsiolkovsky, Hermann Oberth, Wernher Von Braun, Sergey Korolev, or one of the original astronauts. Each student should select a name and then use print and/or online resources to learn about that person's contribution to the space program. Have students write biographies of the space pioneers, based on their research.

Assessment

Evaluate students on the information and writing skills demonstrated in their written biographies.
