Brief Description
Students complete a WebQuest in which they must prove that today's Olympic Games maintain the basic structure and spirit of the ancient Olympics.

Students learn about the ancient Olympic Games and compare them with today's Games.

Keywords

Olympics, compare and contrast, commercialism, gender, amateur and professional, athletes, history, ancient Games, WebQuest

Materials Needed

computers with Internet access or printouts of directions and other information in the Web site noted in the Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan

Following the directions in the Saving the Olympics WebQuest, explain to students that they must prove that today's Olympic Games are very similar to the ancient Olympics. Arrange students into four groups, and have each group research one of the topics described at the site (gender, bribery and scandal, amateur and professional athletes, and commercialism), complete a Comparison-Contrast Chart, and create the suggested product. After each group has presented its product to the rest of the class, ask students to decide which areas are still most like the ancient Olympics. Finally, have students work together to write a summary that includes information from all four areas and demonstrates that today's Olympics are similar to the ancient Games.

Assessment

Evaluate students based on the criteria in the Research Report rubric.
