Students use glossaries to find the meanings of Australian words in the popular song "Waltzing Matilda."

Materials Needed

Lesson Plan

 

  • Distribute copies of the lyrics to the famous Australian song "Waltzing Matilda." Read the opening paragraph on the page that gives background information about the song. Play a recording of the song.
  • Divide the class into small groups. Distribute copies of the glossaries noted above.
  • Tell students to use the glossaries to find the Australian words in the song and to underline or highlight those words.
  • Assign each group one stanza of the song. Tell students to rewrite their assigned stanza, changing the Australian words to American words.

Note: One Australian word in the song is not included in the glossary: trooper (police)
Extension: Have students use the glossaries to write sentences, paragraphs, or short stories using Australian words.

Assessment

Evaluate students' song sheets and stanzas.
