News Across the Miles Web site name: Mrs. Peterson

Web site creator: Terri Peterson, Brentwood Elementary School, Spokane, Washington

Web site URL: http://www.mead.k12.wa.us/BRENT/Peterson/index.htm

"My students' technology projects were getting so creative, I wanted a venue to showcase them," Terri Peterson told Education World. "I created a Web site to show what we do in the course of our day, to recognize outstanding students, and to improve communications with students and parents."

Peterson, a fifth-grade teacher and technology facilitator, designed her Mrs. Peterson Web pages to provide two-way communication with the school community and beyond. On the site, she shares information about curriculum, instruction, and school activities, and also provides facts about the school and its mission. The site includes instructional resources for staff, parents, and students too. Peterson's materials for educators include Online Projects, Teacher Resources, and Curriculum Maps.

"Teachers who visit my Web site will find curricular ideas, valuable resources, organization strategies for building their own Web sites, and ideas for technology integration," explained Peterson. "The homepage showcases outstanding students of the week, current events, and our newsletter. The Homework and Calendar page, explaining when specific assignments are due, is updated daily."

Non-custodial parents who reside as far away as Alaska and Nevada have thanked Peterson for the Web site, which also provides secure access to grades and updated information about classroom events. "Overwhelmingly, parents express their appreciation to me for keeping them so thoroughly informed about their child's education," she stated. "Students use the Web site to check their grades and homework, and to access special resources when they are at home working on a project. I would like this site to be a place where parents, students, and teachers can stay informed and get excited about the educational process."
