Hammersley's purpose in maintaining her Web site Mrs. Hammersley's 4th Grade is to keep the families of her fourth grade students informed about what her students are doing in the classroom. She uses the site as a resource for homework, spelling lists, vocabulary words, the school calendar, and more.

"Social studies, especially Virginia geography and history, are important to fourth graders because of the Virginia Standards of Learning test they take in the spring," explained Hammersley. "I wanted to make a lot of resources available for students to study and review at school, as well as at home."

Toward that end, Hammersley posted on her site Virginia Facts, which poses questions about Virginia history, and Stories in Virginia, a list of books for children that are set in the state. "I think the most valuable material I offer is the information pertaining to Virginia's geography and history," she observed. Parents like the pages that feature history questions with hidden answers. Students can highlight the text to reveal the answers to the questions as they study.

Hammersley's Web-mastering has drawn attention in the form of e-mail messages from teachers across the United States. "The students' parents love the site," she said. "This past year I was lucky that two-thirds of my students had Internet access at home. I want to continue to add new things to my Web site and to make it even better for my students and their families."
