Mrs. Carter's Classroom Closet

Web site name: Mrs. Carter's Class
Web site creator: Judy Carter, Eastanollee Elementary School, Stephens County, Georgia

"Making Web pages is something I really enjoy, so I just have to make time for it," says Judy Carter. "Sometimes I do it instead of crocheting; sometimes I do it instead of cooking a meal!"

Carter, a second-grade teacher, developed a growing interest in technology -- especially technology as an educational tool -- over several years. Creating a class Web site eventually became a personal and professional goal. "More and more I saw the benefits of having a class site," Carter notes. "I spent hours looking at other sites, then began trying to decide on the best way to create my own. I explored various programs and also took a course in HTML."

Today, Mrs. Carter's Class provides lots of material and ideas that other teachers can borrow and adapt, including Scavenger Hunts, WebQuests, Units and Themes, classroom Newsletters, and more.

The primary purposes of the Web site, Carter says, are communication, instruction, and recognition of students. "I created my Web site so students, parents, and other teachers would have a useful resource," Carter says. "It has been an excellent way for me to organize my teaching units and other aspects of classroom management."

Having a laptop computer makes Carter's task of keeping up with the Web site much easier and more convenient. "More important than that, though," she says, "is having a mindset for this. My best advice for those creating their own Web sites is to see everything as a potential Web page!

"I love receiving email from across the country," Carter notes. "I also am encouraged by parents' comments that they find the site to be a useful source of information. Best of all, however, is watching my students use the site with ease and enjoyment; that's when I truly know I have fulfilled my purpose."
