Creating a 'Place' for Teachers
Web site name: Phil's Place
"Phil's Place was created in 1996 to help me earn a teaching position," said Philip Hess. "It's been in a constant state of development ever since." Apparently the site is a success! Although he now is employed as a middle school computer teacher, Hess has transformed his Web site into a resource for teachers in Pennsylvania and in other states. "The site has lots of educational links that make it easy to find all kinds of things of interest," Hess told Education World. "For example, the site includes a link to the Pennsylvania School District search engine that's new and improved for this school year. Teachers can search there for information about the districts and links to their Web sites." The home page of Hess's site also contains tidbits of advice and announcements for the wired educator, including teaching, technology, and substitute teaching tips. This page also lists "Hot Links to Cool Sites" on topics from art education to today in history. The Rants and Raves page highlights technology and substitute teaching articles Hess has written. Hess has lots of plans for the future of Phil's Place. "When I get the time, I plan to redo the entire site to have a database, or two or three, at its core," he said. "This will allow the presentation to change while the underlying information stays the same. I'll be adding a links management system, weather forecasts, possibly forums, and many other smaller features," Hess said.
