Pulling Kids Toward Peace
Web site name: Teaching and Learning for Peace
"Recent events in the United States certainly have reminded all of us to value our environments, our opportunities, and one another, and to work together peacefully," Ann Mason told Education World. "Children are natural peacemakers and they easily operate information technology. By using technology, we can promote peace and work towards its actualization on an international scale. We can easily communicate across borders and cultures via the Internet." With her Web site, Mason seeks to put peace-based lessons in the hands of teachers across the world. A fourth-grade teacher, she developed her lessons through interaction with the storytelling project Imagine Peace. In addition to her online lessons, Mason also guides Pulkids, an organization of students at Pulteney Grammar School who put their exceptional technology skills to work for the betterment of their school and community. The Pulkids group attempts to promote peace by providing a means for sharing among students, Mason said. Using their technology skills to assist teachers within the district, the students serve not only the local community, but the Internet community as well. At her Pulkids site, Mason posts ideas for developing peaceful and peace-building classrooms and she provides suggestions for ways to implement projects like Pulkids. According to Mason, Pulkids is a simple, workable model that can help communities focus on the good things in life, and celebrate humanity and the desire for peace. "Parents and students are appreciative of information technology being promoted and used appropriately in school and they value the skills being positively utilized and built upon," reports Mason. "Internationally, we have had much interest and support from peace organizations that appreciate our purposes. Schools are beginning to connect with us. Although we don't want to be overwhelmed with contact, we are happy to provide a role model for others."
