What or who inspired you to become a teacher?
I wanted to be a teacher from the first day of kindergarten. My kindergarten teacher was amazing. I was further inspired to become a teacher by my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Ferguson. She made school fun yet educational. She ensured everyone was treated with respect and love. Teaching was not just a job to her; it was a way of life, and this created an environment that fostered love, learning and community.
How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?
Where to begin? Technology and the Common Core are just the tip of the iceberg. The expectations have heightened for each grade level. There are more initiatives now than there were 20 years ago.
What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?
The students are what you are there for. Get to know them! Create a classroom that is safe and free of ridicule. Immerse them with literature, music, love, respect and technology. Differentiate and self reflect every day. Be a lifelong learner and share your experiences with your students! Listen to them and teach them to listen to each other!
My best day in the classroom was when…
I became a teacher! Every day I am with my students is my best day!
The best compliment I ever received was...
When a student lost their mother and their father thanked me for being the light of his child's life and the reason for them to be happy again.
What's your favorite part of the school year?
I love the whole year. The beginning when I first meet them. The middle when the light turns on and they start to make progress, and the end when I see how far they have come.
What is your one must-have item for the classroom?
SMART Board
What do you eat for breakfast on school days?
A smoothie
What movie or TV show do you secretly love?
Dangerous Minds
