Teacher of the Day

Name:  Suresh Joshi

School: Ahlcon International School

Subject: Physics

State:  Delhi, India

What or who inspired you to become a teacher?

Although I didn’t want to pursue teaching as a career right from the beginning, the problems that I faced in understanding the concepts and facts have made me passionate about this profession. One of the major factors that affected me during my schooling is that I could never find a science teacher who tried to make science understandable in a lucid manner as it is its nature. Due to my anxiety and helplessness at this juncture of school life, I decided to make ‘science learning’ a joyful experience for each student by choosing teaching as my career.

How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?

Things are changing every day. I started my career as a teacher but now I find myself as a learner. That is the only difference. If you accept yourself as a learner, life becomes very enjoyable. In the beginning of my career, students were only learners for me but now they are my life. I can't breathe without my students. My way of thinking about life and learning has been widened and changed completely. My students have taught me how to teach and even learn.

What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?

Be with the students, for the students. This is the only formula to excel (i.e., involve and evolve). Do not ever try to teach your students--simply try to develop the best environment for their learning. Do not only be the master of the subject, but be the master of transformation. Be visible, approachable and available to your students, and be thankful to your students for making you learn with them.

My best day in the classroom was when…

all the students participated in an activity in the class (teaching motion with the help of the popular traditional Indian game Gulli Danda) and exploring the ideas.

The best compliment I ever received was...

Parent: Sir, you have really made a difference in my child's life. He would have given up if you hadn't intervened. He is blooming now. Your stress-free class environment is commendable.

Student: Sir, you are a teacher of different and unique traits. We always wait for your class, even if it is a last period.

What's your favorite part of the school year?

April to May, September to January. During these months, we get more time for the activities.

What is your one must-have item for the classroom?

Hands-on model and handouts for that day's topic.

What do you eat for breakfast on school days?

Cornflakes and porridge.

What movie or TV show do you secretly love?

"Tom and Jerry" is my all-time favorite.
