Teacher of the Day

Name:  Isabel Pimentel

School:  Phil Swing

Subject:  Math, language arts, history, science, ELD

State:  California

What or who inspired you to become a teacher?

I actually hold a criminal justice degree. I submitted an application to be a substitute teacher. Interestingly, I was offered a contract as a full-time teacher. I loved it so much I returned to school, took an assessment to fulfill my bachelor's requirement and completed a teacher credential program. Twenty years later, I definitely do not regret my choice. I love teaching.

How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?

Technology is definitely a difference. My lessons are all stored in my laptop. I also have a backup. I am able to enhance my lessons through interactive activities online. My students enjoy the interactive board. By being part of the Learnzillion Dreamteam, I have been able to put my lessons online, where they reach lots of students, teachers, and parents worldwide! How cool is that?

What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?

I currently am a BTSA provider. All new teachers in California are required to complete this induction program during their first two years in teaching. I enjoy working with these teachers. I tell them that classroom management is key. I introduce them to how technology can help. The next big thing is parent communication. Technology here is a great plus. Having a webpage, online resources, and knowing which apps can help struggling students is for sure a must-know.

My best day in the classroom was when…

All my students (4th-graders) showed up ready to start their PowerPoints with their Flash drive in hand.

The best compliment I ever received was...

"Teacher, you are like the "smartest" of them all!

"

From a former student, now a parent, "I know TNT child will forever remember this school year."

I was very touched.

What's your favorite part of the school year?

I love to celebrate holidays and dress-up days. I explain to students that these are the times when school is fun! Learning is great, but participating in life is fantastic.

What is your one must-have item for the classroom?

My clicker.

What do you eat for breakfast on school days?

Oatmeal or waffles

What movie or TV show do you secretly love?

Reality shows
