Reflecting on Teacher Appreciation Week

The National PTA has declared May 4-10, 2003, Teacher Appreciation Week. During this week, we are encouraged to show our appreciation to this country's teachers, and to reaffirm our commitment to support their efforts, particularly through parent-teacher partnerships.

As important as teacher/parent and teacher/community partnerships are, however, they are not, for most teachers, their most important relationships. The relationships that matter are those a teacher forms with his or her students. A single teacher -- as each of us surely recalls -- can affect a student's self image; influence a student's career; determine a student's future success or failure; color a student's life. A single teacher can make all the difference in the world -- can make the world different -- for a child.

This week, therefore, in recognition of Teacher Appreciation Week, we asked all three of our teacher diarists to reflect upon those teachers who most influenced their lives and to share their memories with us.
