Teaching English in France
By Graziella Guiguizian

What is teaching like today? Who should do it? And who shouldn't? This Education World series features essays on teaching by teachers as they answer the question, "If you had it to do all over again, would you still become a teacher?"

I love teaching. I love the English language. And I love teaching English.

I've been teaching English in France for nearly 20 years now -- and I still love doing it. I work in a high school that prepares students for a professional career. It's called un lyce professionnel in France. My students are 16 to 20. They are not very good at languages, but they are motivated and try their best to succeed and to please me. It 's a big challenge for me as their level is very different from one to another.

I also teach beginning English to kids in primary school. Kids are so active and happy to learn a new subject. We repeat words and sentences a lot, and learn songs, poems, and dialogues. We have a lot of fun and I love working with them. No stress for me, no exam for them.

Finally, for two hours a week I work in a jail, teaching convicts. It's completely different from teaching in a school, and very interesting. The convicts are eager to learn and to have better opportunities in life once they get out.
