A social media Web site for elementary and middle-school students is offering free subscriptions for K-8 teachers.

Pen Pal Kids Club, an educational social media site, allows kids ages 4 to 14 to share, explore and playwith global pen pals in a completely secure environment.
The site’s developers say this encourages a love for learning about other cultures.
“Our goal is to instill a love of learning about different people and places in today’s young students, so we’re thrilled to be able to offer this wonderful free resource to classroom teachers across the U.S.,” said site co-founder Shelley Aliotti. “Now, with Pen Pal Kids Club, children can reach across geographic, time and language barriers to communicate safely with each other, and expand their knowledge and understanding of world cultures in ways never before possible.”
Among the key educational and safety features of Pen Pal Kids Club:
Students write and receive digital postcards from children around the globe, while learning about their new friends' lifestyles, locales, dreams and aspirations. To ensure privacy, students will create and communicate via a classroom (group) avatar, building relationships with pen pals anywhere in the world. The teacher will locate and approve the pen pals, and help guide students in the types of questions they ask, so that the experience is an engaging learning opportunity.
Postcards are automatically translated into seven different languages (English, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian and German), allowing students from most major regions of the world to communicate with each other.
Students play engaging educational games relating to world history, language, social studies, economics, geography and government. The six interactive games on the site’s current roster are designed for a range of ages and skill sets.
Thanks to Pen Pal Kids’ Clubs’ exclusive partnership with Encyclopedia Britannica, students can refer to this database to learn more about their pen pals’ cultures, to help with homework and class assignments, to build their knowledge about world history and present-day countries and people.
Students are protected by a safe, advertiser-free online environment that offers built-in parental/educator controls.
