Teachers were undoubtedly scrambling to revise lesson plans in between news reports that U.S. forces had stormed bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan. Bin Laden, 54, was killed after a gun battle with Navy SEALs and CIA paramilitary forces at a compound in the city of Abbottabad. He was shot in the left eye, NBC News reported.
Citing an anonymous official, NBC reported that the special operations forces were on the ground for less than 40 minutes and the operation was watched in real time by CIA director Leon Panetta and other intelligence officials in a conference room at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.
Speaking from the White House, President Barack Obama addressed the nation late Sunday evening.
"Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan," Obama said. "A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body."
According to CNN, bin Laden was buried at sea to honor the Muslim tradition of burying the deceased within 24 hours of death.
