Check students' work as they do it.
According to Tools for Teaching guru Fred Jones, if you want to train students to work hard while being conscientious, you first provide an incentive (in the form of a desirable reinforcing activity), and then you check the work as it is being done, ensuring that students only receive the incentive when their work meets your standards. "The technology of incentive management for classroom assignments," says Dr. Jones, "hinges upon contemporaneous work check."
