A fifth-grade teacher in Florida uses the activity to discuss and explain classroom procedures.
Before students arrive on the first day of school, tape under each student's desk an index card with a numbered question written it. When it's time to talk about class rules and procedures, have students check under their desks and find the index cards. Ask the student who found the question with the number 1 on it to read aloud his or her question. The question might be, "Mrs. S, when can I sharpen my pencil?" You excitedly reply, "Oh, John, what a wise question!" or "Oh, Tricia, I'm so glad you thought to ask that question!" Then share the procedure, rule, or information that answers the question. Continue until all questions have been asked and answered.
